UNDP Angola

This week, representatives from Angola’s Ministry of Health (MINSA), the Global Fund, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) visited Zango, Kapalanga, and Kilamba Kiaxi hospitals in Luanda to monitor progress on the installation of new oxygen plants. The initiative spans three provinces – Luanda, Benguela, and Cuanza Sul – and is part of broader efforts to reinforce the national health system.

Funded by the Global Fund and implemented by UNDP, the project involves the installation of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants in eight key hospitals: Zango, Kapalanga, Kilamba Kiaxi, Lobito, Benguela General, Cubal, Bocoio, and Libolo.

These plants will significantly boost the supply of medical oxygen for critical and emergency care, strengthening Angola’s capacity to respond to respiratory illnesses and future pandemics.

Work has been underway since April and includes civil and electrical upgrades, the procurement and installation of medical gas systems (oxygen, compressed air, and vacuum), and the provision of generators to ensure continuous operation.

The Global Fund's support goes beyond oxygen systems. In Kapalanga and Benguela General Hospitals, the project also includes the installation of modern medical waste incinerators – essential for safe and environmentally sound waste management. This contributes to improved hygiene standards and infection control across health facilities.

This week’s visit provided an opportunity to assess implementation progress and reaffirm the joint commitment of the Government of Angola, the Global Fund, and UNDP to building a stronger, safer, and more resilient national health system.
