Newsletter 1/2021: News on uranium legacy remediation activities in Uzbekistan

The “Stakeholder Engagement for Uranium Legacy Remediation in Central Asia. Phase II” project has issued the first edition of the newsletter highlighting main activities of the project for the period of January-July 2021.

What has been done within this period?

•  The project purchased dosimetry equipment to provide the local population with independent measurements of the radiation level to monitor radiation exposure.

•  In Charkesar and Yangiabad, project experts trained 37 representatives of the local community on how to start a business, and delivered presentations for local government officials and entrepreneurs on how to establish cooperative (co-op) and integrate green community development concept.

•  The project has announced a competition for the selection of business projects for financing/co-financing and implementation at the pilot areas of Yangiabad (Tashkent region) and Charkesar (Namangan region).

EU funded “Stakeholder engagement in Uranium legacy remediation in Central Asia. Phase II” project is implemented by UNDP Uzbekistan jointly with OSCE and the Ministry of Emergency Situation of Uzbekistan. The project aims to increase awareness of local decision-makers and community members about the uranium waste risks and to reduce these risks through implementation of gender sensitive economic development initiatives.
