Floods and Mudflows in Uzbekistan

Floods and Mudflows in Uzbekistan

January 9, 2026

Floods and mudflows remain a serious threat to many regions of Uzbekistan, especially in the context of climate change. Increased precipitation and a rising snow line intensify erosion in river basins and increase the risk of destructive mudflows. These processes cause significant damage to communities, infrastructure, and the national economy, particularly in mountainous and foothill areas.

This publication summarizes practical experience in studying floods and mudflows in Uzbekistan and is intended for a preliminary assessment of flood risks. The material may be useful for disaster risk reduction practitioners, as well as for planning and operating infrastructure facilities.

The reference manual was developed within the framework of the joint UNDP, Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Uzhydromet project “Enhancing Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to Increase the Resilience of Communities in Uzbekistan to Climate Change–Induced Hazards,” with support from the Green Climate Fund.
