March 16, 2023

The report was prepared by UNDP with support from the Sustainable Health in Procurement Project (SHiPP) funded by Sida, Sweden's government agency for development cooperation. The project was focused on the analysis of the medical waste management system in the selected healthcare institution of Ukraine.

The purpose of this case study is to identify the risks and barriers on the way to safe disposal of medical waste in accordance with the national legislation, to determine their impact on the environment and the health of healthcare workers, and to make recommendations for improving the waste management system based on the best international practices.

The report does not include verification of the information provided by health care institutions and is not a comprehensive audit or assessment of compliance with the environmental legislation.

The overall goal of the project is to promote the establishment of an effective, economically reasonable and safe medical waste management system in Ukraine to minimize the negative impact of waste on the environment and human health.
