UNDP and Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine to Reinforce Cooperation for Countering Disinformation and Fast Recovery

Kyiv, 27 March 2023 -  UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, Mr. Jaco Cilliers, met with Mr. Oleksandr Tkachenko, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, to reinforce existing cooperation and discuss future opportunities between UNDP and theMinistry.

During the meeting, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine,   Jaco Cilliers highlighted the active role of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy (MCIP)  in countering disinformation, and ensuring information security and development of media literacy within the population. He reaffirmed UNDP’s support, commitment, and readiness to assist in the buildout of sustainable government communication to counter disinformation and grow the resilience of Ukrainian society.

“In the circumstances of the full scale invasion, it is of paramount importance to support media and digital literacy initiatives of the Government to enhance the capacities of policymakers, educators, information and media professionals and youth organizations to identify, dispel, and debunk false and misleading information and with joint effort reduce and prevent negative influence of disinformation on all the populations, especially the most vulnerable and hard to reach groups, so no one would be left behind”, stressed Mr. Jaco Cilliers. 

UNDP Resident Representative announced and confirmed UNDP’s  strong support for the National Media Literacy Project “Filter” of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, aimed at enhancing media literacy among the population. 

Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko expressed his gratitude to  UNDP for the support provided to Ministry during previous years and welcomed the strengthening of the cooperation in the nearest future.

“Already provided support from our longtime partner UNDP contributed into Ukraine’s achievement in the field of countering disinformation and development of media literacy and building a more resilient society. We also hope for more cooperation and appreciate UNDP’s readiness to provide assistance to the Ministry in the fast recovery process”, added Oleksandr Tkachenko.

Mr. Cilliers  welcomed Ministry’s  efforts to preserve and recover the Ukrainian culture heritage and reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment  to provide support in aid management and coordination capacities of the Ministry, as well as in damage assessment of cultural heritage and its recovery and reconstruction.
