Since the restoration of independence, Timor-Leste has witnessed significant achievements in establishing systems, institutions, and processes despite its post-conflict context. Timor-Leste is one of a few countries in the Asia Pacific region where women account for 40% of the members of the National Parliament. Likewise, the country has made advancements in ratifying most of the key international human rights instruments and establishing a legal framework demonstrating a commitment to human rights and democracy. However, more effort is needed to overcome the legal, institutional, and social barriers that vulnerable groups encounter in fully enjoying their political and socio-economic rights.
