RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE, UNDP TAJIKISTAN
DR. PRATIBHA MEHTA
Wednesday, 30 October 2019 (15:00)
Honourable Mr. Juha Virtanen, Ambassador of Finland to Central Asia!
Dear Mr. Umed Bobozoda, Ombudsman of the Republic of Tajikistan!
Distinguished partners and colleagues,
It is my immense pleasure today to Handover IT equipment to the Ombudsman’s Office, which will help strengthen complain mechanisms.
I would like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and personally Ambassador Mr. Juha Virtanen, for continuous support in strengthening the rule of law and promotion of human rights in Tajikistan.
I would like to congratulate everyone on the 25th anniversary of adoption of Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan which is a cornerstone document for peace, development and Human Rights protection in Tajikistan and which gives Ombudsman’s Office the role to monitor and ensure proper use and promotion of this vital document. This year UNDP is also celebrating 25 Years of partnership for empowering people, strengthening institutions, building resiliency and contributing to sustainable development in Tajikistan.
Since the establishment of Ombudsman office UNDP has been supporting this office to enhance its capacity and role to ensure rule of law and human rights in the country.
The role of the Ombudsman Office is critical in the implementation and monitoring of Agenda 2030, especially in SDG 16, focusing on peaceful and inclusive societies by ensuring protection of human rights, access to justice for all and accountable institutions at all level.
The role of Ombudsman Office in implementation of all UN human rights treaties, facilitation of signing the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and ratification of OPCAT (Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture) is critical, which requires strong coordination with all relevant ministries and the CSOs.
Therefore, I believe, the transfer of these IT equipment to Ombudsman office will strengthen the capacities of its staff to stand for those human rights values and principles that it should protect and also be a good partner in promotion of Spotlight initiative to advocate for gender equality in Tajikistan.
Thank you very much.
