Business #2030 Conference Calls for Bold Action to Position Albania as a Sustainable, Competitive EU Market Player
December 8, 2025
Business #2030 Conference
Tirana, 4 December 2025 – Albania stands at a defining moment on its path toward European Union membership, with all negotiation chapters now open. Against this backdrop, the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden, UN agencies, and national institutions, convened the second edition of the Business #2030 Conference: A Sustainable Future Made in Albania, bringing together leaders from government, business, finance, development partners, academia, and youth.
The conference underlined that sustainability is no longer an aspiration but a decisive condition for competitiveness in the EU Single Market. With the EU’s new Growth Plan mobilizing billions in grants and affordable loans for the Western Balkans—and regulatory requirements such as CBAM, CSRD, and due diligence standards—Albania’s private sector must urgently align with European norms to remain competitive.
Key Themes and Discussions
The conference featured high-level panels and keynote addresses exploring:
- Sustainable Competitiveness on Albania’s EU Path – ESG performance, carbon accounting, and supply-chain due diligence as prerequisites for trade and investment.
- Agriculture & Agro-processing – Green standards, certification, organic production, and alignment with the EU Common Agricultural Policy.
- Textiles, Clothing, Leather & Footwear (TCLF) – Circular economy approaches, transparency, and modernization of one of Albania’s largest export sectors.
- Investment & Access to Finance – Building investor confidence and unlocking financing for sustainable, innovative businesses.
- Youth Entrepreneurship & Innovation – Showcasing young founders driving Albania’s global competitiveness.
- RECP Clubs & EU Value Chains – Partnerships for cleaner production, efficiency, and export readiness.
Speakers included Minister of Economy Delina Ibrahimaj, Ambassador of Sweden Niklas Ström, UNDP Resident Representative Randi Davis, international experts such as Adam Brånby (Woolpower) and Prof. Thomas Lindhqvist (Lund University), alongside leaders from banking, industry, and academia.
Participants emphasized that no single actor can deliver Albania’s transition alone. Achieving EU-level competitiveness will require:
- Government to align policies with EU acquis and incentivize first movers.
- Financial institutions to expand green and ESG-linked financing.
- Businesses view sustainability as a strategic asset.
- Academia and accelerators to prepare the workforce for the green and digital economy.
- Civil society to ensure inclusivity and social equity.
The next 24–36 months are critical. Decisions taken now—by companies, government agencies, and financial institutions—will determine whether Albania capitalizes on EU opportunities and secures shared prosperity.
