About the Project

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. SIDS, particularly those in the Pacific region, are highly likely vulnerable due to their dependence on imports of goods, services, and energy supply; and a limitation of diversification of economic means.

This project will support the inclusivity of gender-responsive actions to make women's and men’s concerns and experiences an integral dimension of climate-related policy and programs. Furthermore, the project will contribute to low carbon energy emissions and renewable energy in the country.

The Pacific Green Transformation Project will have two (2) years duration to support rural communities to have access to clean and reliable energy, especially those who have not connected to the national electrical grid; Solarize national medical warehouse and two community health centers in the rural area; and revonation, solarization and installation of ICT equipment at 15 secondary and vocational schools’ ICT lab. Approximately more than 750,000 people (men and women) will benefit from rural electrification. These include solarization in 1,000 households and 15 schools in three (3) municipalities.

Key Planned Objectives

This project in Timor-Leste has 3 outputs that will contribute to achieve clean energy and just transition towards net-zero pathways, and helping vulnerable and fragile settings to be more resilient to climate impacts:

  • Output 1: Households not connected to the national electricity grid to have access to clean and reliable power supply
  • Output 2: Health service centres to have improved facilities for better service provision
  • Output 3: Support selected schools to have solar power-based Information, Communication Technology (ICT) labs to promote digital teaching and learning

Project Achievements

  • Completed the installation of solar panel kits and distribution of improved cooking stoves to 1000 rural households of Manatuto, Manufahi and Ainaro municipalities.
  • Launched the solarization of the National Medical Warehouse at the Institute of Pharmacy and Medical Products (INFPM).
  • Received 450 computers and other ICT accessories for the 15 school ICT labs in Manatuto, Manufahi and Ainaro municipalities.
  • Completed feasibility study for solarization for 2 health posts and 15 school ICT labs in secondary and vocational schools.
  • Initiated the construction and rehabilitation work at the 2 heath posts and 15 school ICT labs.

Gender Equality

Climate change impact is not “Gender Neutral”, Women commonly face higher risk and more significant burdens from the effects of climate change. The Pacific Green Transformation Project ensures equal participation of men and women in the decision-making process and promotes gender-equal roles in applying and benefiting clean energy technology.
