On 9 August 2011, UNDP Resident Representative in China, Ms. Renata Dessallien (photo) hosted Rwandan Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, H.E. Mr. Francois Xavier Ngarambe in an international policy dialogue on the history, achievements and vision of the Rwandan people and government. As a significant beneficiary of Chinese aid since friendly relations were established in the 1950’s, including the construction of a major national hospital and agricultural demonstration facility, Mr. Ngarembe spoke of Rwanda’s difficult past and determination to rebuild itself politically, economically and socially. Inspired by progress made in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals in Rwanda, he also talked of a proud nation with low crime rates, high levels of female participation in politics, strong institutions, zero tolerance towards corruption, safe and secure waterways – and absolutely no plastic bags!
