Scaling Up Climate Ambition on Land Use And Agriculture (SCALA)
Background
Achieving climate-related goals in land use and agriculture requires a transformative shift in agri-food systems. This involves adopting systems-level thinking to identify impactful climate actions, implementing cross-sectoral, gender-responsive, and inclusive approaches, and engaging both public and private sectors for action and finance. SCALA supports 12 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, working with government stakeholders, civil society, the private sector, and academia. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), and implemented by FAO and UNDP, SCALA builds on the NAP-Ag Programme's successes from 2015-2018. It contributes to the UNDP Climate Promise, FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative, and collaborates with the NDC Partnership and NAP Global Network to enhance synergies with other initiatives.
Objectives
The Support Programme on Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture through NDCs and NAPs (SCALA) aims to support transformative climate action in the land use and agriculture sectors to reduce GHG emissions, enhance removals, and strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change in 12 partner countries. Its specific objective is to translate NDCs and NAPs into actionable and transformative climate solutions in these sectors through multi-stakeholder engagement. SCALA emphasizes collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive implementation and addresses several cross-cutting issues.
Expected Results
- Information and assessments used by national stakeholders to identify and appraise transformative climate actions to advance NDC/NAP priorities in land-use and agriculture.
- Climate risk-informed land-use and agriculture sector priorities are integrated into national and sectoral planning, budgeting, and monitoring.
- Private sector engagement in climate action in land-use and agriculture.
