UNDP organizes workshop on Mongolia’s national biodiversity strategy and action plan

Ulaanbaatar, 12 April 2024 –The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) jointly organised a consultation workshop on the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The workshop engaged diverse participants from the Government, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations that are involved in biodiversity   conservation activities in Mongolia.

During the workshop, biodiversity practitioners, environment protection experts, scientists and environmental officers reviewed the draft revision of the  National Biodiversity Targets, goals and  actions of NBSAP that is aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework and National Policies. 

Despite ongoing efforts, biodiversity is deteriorating worldwide at an unprecedented rate including in Mongolia threatening the well-being of all living being and the environment. As a signatory to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Mongolia is required to start implementing the targets outlined in the Global Biodiversity Framework, an international commitment aimed at protecting nature and halting the loss of biodiversity worldwide.

Ms. Uranchimeg Tserendorj, the National Focal Point of the Convention on Biological Diversity and Director of the Natural Resources Policy and Coordination Department at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, emphasized that the revising and implementing the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan reflects how Mongolia intends to fulfils it’s commitment to conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of the components of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits of genetic resources as it is the main instrument for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity. 

The Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support project, funded by the Global Environment Facility and co-implemented by UNDP and Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, is active in 139 countries around the world. The project aims to fast-track readiness and early actions to implement the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework by conducting rapid review of NBSAPs for alignment with the post-2020 GBF; assessing the monitoring systems; reviewing and aligning policies and structures for coherence with the GBF; and exploring biodiversity finance activities.

The feedback, recommendations and suggestions of the participants will significantly contribute to further improvement of the National biodiversity strategy and action plan of Mongolia.
