Ulaanbaatar, 4 March 2026 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through its Climate Promise 2 project supported by the Government of the United Kingdom, launched the Model COP17 Simulation to strengthen youth engagement and build their capacities on issues related to desertification, land degradation, and land based climate action.

As Mongolia prepares to host and preside over the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) in 2026, the initiative aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national and global policy dialogues.

“Mongolia is confronting the intertwined challenges of climate change, land degradation, and desertification, issues that affect not only our environment, but our herders’ livelihoods, food and water security, and economic stability. As host of UNCCD COP17, Mongolia has a historic opportunity to share our experience, amplify traditional knowledge, and lead global dialogue on land restoration and sustainable land management. The Youth Model COP17 Simulation is a valuable contribution to this effort, supporting young people to build confidence and understanding as they engage in discussions on land and climate issues.” highlighted Mr. Munkhtamir Batbayar, Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia.

A total of 60 young participants took part in the two day simulation, with nearly equal representation from both rural areas and Ulaanbaatar and women comprising 67% of participants, highlighting strong nationwide participation and notable engagement of women in climate and environmental leadership. Participants engaged in COP style negotiations by assuming the roles of country delegates and deliberating key thematic areas such as desertification, land degradation, green finance, and technological solutions for land restoration.

“This Model COP17 Simulation demonstrated the power, innovation, and leadership of young people who are ready to shape the future of land restoration and climate action. The energy and bold thinking shown here reaffirm that restoring land is not only an environmental priority, but a generational mission rooted in hope.”  remarked Ms. Sophie Worrall, Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy in Ulaanbaatar

“Young people are not observers of climate action, they are co drivers. Through this simulation and UNDP’s Movers4Climate programme, we are strengthening foundational skills and confidence to help young people engage more effectively in discussions on land and climate challenges. UNDP, together with partners, is proud to support Mongolia’s efforts toward an inclusive and resilient future that reflects the perspectives and aspirations of its young people.” noted Mr. Firuz Saidkhadzhaev, Climate Finance and Development Economist, UNDP Mongolia.
