UNDP Facilitates Mongolia–South Korea Dialogue on Carbon Market Cooperation

Ulaanbaatar, 13 May 2026 – A two‑day workshop titled Unlocking Mongolia–South Korea Carbon Market Cooperation Opportunities was held in Ulaanbaatar, bringing together government institutions, private sector stakeholders, financial institutions and international partners to discuss cooperation on carbon markets between Mongolia and the Republic of Korea.
The workshop was jointly organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Korea Environment Corporation, and the Korea Research Institute on Climate Change. It provided a platform for dialogue and experience sharing on carbon market mechanisms and the technical aspects including GHG inventory management, designing MRV frameworks, carbon credit authorization process and governance while considering Mongolia’s national context.
The event brought together more than 100 participants, and discussions focused on policy considerations, institutional readiness, and real-life case studies, while encouraging exchange between public and private sector actors on opportunities and challenges related to carbon market development.
Opening the workshop, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, T. Sandag-Ochir, remarked: “Mongolia is committed to advancing climate action in line with our national development priorities. Engaging in constructive dialogue and learning from international experience, including from the Republic of Korea, is essential as we consider market‑based approaches to support our climate goals.”
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Choi Jin-won highlighted: “The Republic of Korea values its cooperation with Mongolia on climate action and sustainable development. This workshop provides an important platform to share experience, deepen understanding, and explore areas where continued collaboration can support climate‑related efforts.”
UNDP Mongolia’s Resident Representative, Matilda Dimovska emphasized: “Carbon markets are complex and evolving, and informed, inclusive dialogue is essential. UNDP is pleased to support this exchange between Mongolian stakeholders and Korean partners, drawing on global expertise while ensuring discussions remain aligned with Mongolia’s national priorities and institutional context.”
The workshop forms part of broader efforts to enhance Mongolia’s readiness to engage in international climate and carbon market discussions, while fostering regional cooperation and knowledge sharing. By bringing together national stakeholders and international partners, the event contributed to building a shared understanding of carbon market related concepts, policy considerations, and institutional frameworks, supporting informed and inclusive discussions aligned with Mongolia’s evolving climate policy landscape.
