Moldovan drivers can choose safer roads thanks to a digital map of road accidents

August 16, 2023

Drivers in the Republic of Moldova can now access a digital map of road accidents, published by the National Public Security Inspectorate (INSP) and the State Road Administration (ASD). This product was developed thanks to the funding offered by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and to the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The digital map details traffic accidents, their types and causes, as well as other related data, such as road condition, geometry, road surface, flatness index and others. Thus, drivers can use the search engine on the website to choose the safest roads when driving through the country.

Also, the data presented on the map will serve the relevant public institutions in planning necessary works, increasing transparency, analysing road traffic and accidents, facilitating communication and the exchange of data between the institutions regarding road infrastructure, as well as the continuous development of road networks.

Moreover, INSP employees were trained to use ASD services, such as identifying and locating accidents according to the national road nomenclature, using the search engine by kilometre, accessing information on infrastructure objects, such as bridges, road indicators, vehicle tonnage limit, points of interest along the roads, allowing them to effectively find and locate accidents on the map. This increases accident management and reporting efficiency.

From January 2023, INSP collected and reported road accidents daily. The information on the map will be continuously updated and offered for use by all interested parties.

The partnership between UNDP, INSP and ASD promotes a data-driven approach to traffic management and road safety in Moldova, with a strong focus on transparency, efficiency, and proactive planning for future infrastructure changes.
