Legal assistance

To safeguard the rights of victims of the Beirut blast, including the most vulnerable groups such as women, children and the elderly, UNDP built on its established partnership with the Beirut Bar Association (BBA) to support the provision of free legal assistance through legal helpdesks in affected area, including Karantina, and a web-based solution. To date, more than 1000 victims/survivors benefited from legal assistance services provided through this partnership.

LNOB Report

As part of its immediate response to the Beirut Blast, UNDP launched a “Leave No One Behind Report” to inform post-recovery frameworks in ways that help reduce the likelihood of compiling losses on vulnerable groups. The report employs a human development perspective to the response to the Beirut blast and outlines a non-exhaustive set of 7 guiding principles for an inclusive and just recovery process. It argues for a people-centered and inclusive recovery that not only responds to the immediate impact of the blast, but that also addresses the institutional and legal frameworks that have for long been manufacturing vulnerabilities in Lebanon. By advocating for a participatory, community-based, approach to recovery that acknowledges people’s voices and demands, the report focuses not only on what should be done to rebuild Beirut, but also on how it should be done.
