From idea to export: how mentorship helped develop production and reach a new level

Baktygul Kanybekova and Azamat Zhailoobaev
Azamat Zhailoobaev is the founder of the agricultural cooperative "Bai Dyikan Ala-Buka" in the Jalal-Abad region. Since 2016, he has been working in the fruit processing industry, and since 2020, the cooperative has begun to actively develop. The main products are apples, plums and apricots, which were previously sold as raw materials. The entrepreneur was interested in the export potential: he noticed that neighboring countries buy products from Kyrgyzstan, process, package and sell them abroad under their own brands - at a higher price.
"I realized that we ourselves can go for export. Not just grow, but process, package, certify. This is how the demand for knowledge and support appeared," Azamat explains.
As part of the UNDP mentorship programme, he began to systematically develop his business and prepare to enter the international market. Together with his mentor Baktygul Kanybekova, Azamat developed a strategic plan until 2030 and also received the international organic certificate "Organica", which is necessary for export.
Under the guidance of the mentor, the business expanded its range: now, in addition to traditional fruits, the cooperative began to freeze strawberries, raspberries and cherries. In addition, the team grew to 28 people, with clearly distributed tasks.
"I used to rely on intuition. Now - on the plan, structure and professional advice. This changes the approach to the entire business," says Azamat.
One of the key decisions was the construction of a new three-story production building. According to the recommendations of the mentor, the first floor will be allocated for refrigeration chambers, the second - for processing, the third - for packaging products. The project provides for the creation of jobs, including for people with disabilities.
"My goal is not just a business, but a socially responsible enterprise. We want not only to earn money, but also to give opportunities to others," he emphasizes.
Azamat also shares simple but important advice for aspiring entrepreneurs:
"Don't wait for the perfect moment. Start with an idea and a desire - everything else can be built step by step."
Mentoring as a growth point: Baktygul Kanybekova's experience
For Baktygul Kanybekova, participation in the mentorship programme was a logical continuation of her professional path. She shares her experience in management, team building and strategic planning. Working with a mentee is not only support, but also an opportunity to develop yourself.
“The programme opened up new approaches for me. Communication with young entrepreneurs gives a fresh perspective and energizes,” she says.
As part of the programme, she underwent additional coaching training, participated in meetings with other entrepreneurs and expanded her own professional network. In her opinion, mentorship is an informal but effective educational environment that helps entrepreneurs move from idea to action faster.
“There were no such programmes before. Now it is a real resource for starting and developing a business,” she emphasizes.
Baktygul is confident that successful mentorship is built on openness, respect and a willingness to share experience. She recommends that young entrepreneurs first establish professional connections, gain basic knowledge, and only then start their own business - with a clear understanding of the processes and goals.
The story of Azamat and Baktygul is part of a broader mentorship programme implemented by UNDP as part of the Aid for Trade project, with financial support from the Government of Finland, aimed at expanding the capabilities of entrepreneurs from the regions of Kyrgyzstan. Through the experience of mentors and practical support, programme participants find sustainable development paths, strengthen business skills and expand their contribution to their communities. A total of 60 entrepreneurs from different regions of Kyrgyzstan have gone through the programme, which has created 15 new enterprises and 56 jobs - 45 of which were taken by women and people with disabilities.
Support for entrepreneurship remains an important part of UNDP's work in the Kyrgyz Republic. Such initiatives contribute to the implementation of the National Development Programme until 2030, stimulate the economies of the regions and create new jobs. The programme also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting sustainable and inclusive approaches to business.
