Driving Women's Economic Empowerment in Kyrgyzstan
February 4, 2025

In Kyrgyzstan, women entrepreneurs are breaking barriers, redefining industries, and fostering inclusive growth—thanks to UNDP’s support. By strengthening women-led businesses, fostering mentorship, and supporting innovative ventures, UNDP and its core donors are not just empowering individuals but transforming entire communities.
Through a dedicated investment of $328,963, UNDP has supported over 800 women through a mentorship program, an e-commerce incubation initiative, and the establishment of three Women's Creative Labs. These efforts have resulted in a 30% increase in sales (including online sales), with total revenues reaching $5,129,377.51. Additionally, these programs have contributed to the launch of nine new women's economic empowerment projects, demonstrating the tangible impact of strategic investments in women's entrepreneurship.

From a Family Dream to a Regional Tourism Hub: The Story of 'Sunrise' in Osh
For Zumrat Ibraimzhanova, the journey to entrepreneurship began with an unfinished house and a vision. Today, her hotel, "Sunrise," stands as a benchmark for hospitality and innovation in Kyrgyzstan’s tourism sector.
Initially starting with just four rooms, Zumrat focused on client needs, gradually expanding the business into a 53-room facility with a restaurant, conference hall, and a tour service. UNDP’s support through the "Aid for Trade" project was a turning point—introducing green technologies like water purification systems and fostering sustainable tourism initiatives.
“We reached a new level with UNDP’s help,” says Zumrat. “Now, we create signature tours that showcase the soul of our region, from visiting artisans to exploring breathtaking landscapes.”
Beyond her business, Zumrat mentors aspiring women entrepreneurs, helping them navigate the challenges of the industry. Her mentees, including the founders of yurt camps like "Tulpar" and "Barchyn," are now carving out their own success stories, supported by UNDP’s mentorship program.

'Tomo': Stitching Together Economic Independence for Women
Another shining example of women’s entrepreneurship in Kyrgyzstan is "Tomo," founded by Nargiza—a project dedicated to empowering mothers, homemakers, and people with disabilities through amigurumi knitting. Inspired by the Japanese word for "friend," Tomo provides women with materials and training, allowing them to earn an income from home.
Nargiza, a mother of three, understands firsthand the challenges of balancing family responsibilities with financial independence. Through UNDP’s E-commerce Incubation Program, she has gained the skills to expand her business digitally, reaching wider markets and increasing sales.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the E-commerce training,” she says. “It’s helping me grow my project, search for new markets, and empower even more women.”
Her next step? Launching customizable products on international marketplaces like Wildberries and developing DIY kits for children—innovative steps that position Tomo as a leader in creative entrepreneurship.

UNDP’s Lasting Impact: Results from the Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative
The success of Zumrat and Nargiza is part of a larger movement driven by UNDP’s commitment to gender-responsive economic development. Through mentorship programs and Women’s Creative Labs, UNDP has empowered:
64 women and youth through structured mentorship, with 35 mentees securing grants.
89 rural women trained in financial literacy, handicrafts, and digital marketing.
28 women-led businesses transitioning to online sales, leading to a 17% increase in digital revenue.
56 new permanent jobs, with 41 filled by women and 4 by people with disabilities.
By integrating financial literacy, business coaching, and digital tools, these programs are ensuring that women entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan are not just starting businesses but sustaining and expanding them.
A Future Built on Inclusion and Sustainability
The success stories of Zumrat and Nargiza illustrate the transformative power of investing in women entrepreneurs. By combining UNDP’s expertise with the commitment of core partners, the initiative is fostering a more inclusive and resilient economy in Kyrgyzstan.
Partner at Core support is not just about funding—it’s about building ecosystems where women can thrive, innovate, and lead. And as more women gain access to mentorship, capital, and digital opportunities, the future of Kyrgyzstan’s economy will be one shaped by their ambition, creativity, and resilience.
