The Kyrgyzstan Conservation Fund

Mobilizing Sustainable Finance for Safeguarding Kyrgyzstan's Biodiversity, Empowering Communities, and Sustaining the Future

The Kyrgyzstan Conservation  Fund (KCF) is a financing mechanism dedicated to conserving the country’s rich biodiversity and promoting sustainable development. The KCF aims to consolidate and mobilize government, private, and donor contributions to support biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and development of innovative conservation mechanisms and nature-based green initiatives at the local, national, and sub-national levels.

The KCF brings together government, development partners, civil society, and the private sector in a shared mission.

Though focused on biodiversity, the KCF shall also, directly and indirectly, impact other aspects of society, including promoting economic diversification and alternative sustainable revenue streams, enhancing regulatory environments, increasing innovation, and empowering women, youth, and local communities.

Strategic Action and Theory of Change

The KCF shall adopt a whole-society approach towards biodiversity conservation in Kyrgyzstan, leveraging traditional and innovative financing mechanisms, and working with diverse actors to support:

  • Increased Biodiversity Protection, Conservation, and Restoration;

  • Improved Relationship between People and Nature for sustainable livelihoods;

  • Creation of an enabling environment for long-term ecological and economic stability.

DESIRED CHANGE

Sustained, “whole society” approach to conservation and protection of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain ecosystems and biodiversity

IMPACT

Enhancing environmental resilience for people and the planet by fostering sustainable, innovative revenue streams and scaling biodiversity conservation finance, while establishing the foundation for a nationally-owned Conservation Trust Fund in the Kyrgyz Republic

OUTCOMES

Protected and Restored Mountain Ecosystems

Creation of an Enabling Environment

Improved Relationship between People and Nature

Just as biodiversity conservation is a complex and interconnected issue, these three outcomes which focus explicitly on nature (planet) and people, the overall enabling environment to embed and expand biodiversity conservation principles, unlock solutions (partnerships) and ensure the benefits of a healthy ecosystem are available to all people in Kyrgyzstan (peace and prosperity).
