Project

Promoting Biomass Production and Use in Georgia

Summary

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) supported efforts to promote renewable energy in Georgia by advancing the production and use of upgraded biomass fuels in the municipal sector.

The project stimulated both demand and supply through an investment grant mechanism and targeted public outreach, contributing to the development of a national biomass market. Key achievements included the establishment of pilot biomass plants in Tbilisi and several regions of Georgia, the founding and initial support of the Association of Biomass Producers of Georgia, and the implementation of a public awareness campaign highlighting the benefits of upgraded biomass fuels.
