Engaging Government, NGO, Community, and Enterprise into Wetland Conservation and Development in Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve

July 14, 2025

Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve in Shanghai, a vital stopover and wintering site for migratory birds along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, has faced growing ecological threats from marine debris. Non-degradable waste such as plastic foam and fishing nets has severely influenced wetland habitats and endangered bird populations.  In response, a collaborative conservation initiative was launched engaging government, NGO, community, and enterprise and integrating efforts across sectors.

Key actions included volunteer cleanups, a closed-loop marine waste management system, and ecological education and cultural outreach programs. The project successfully reduced marine pollution, restored waterbird habitats, and raised ecological awareness through exhibitions, festivals, and the recycling platform. It also supported alternative livelihoods for former fishermen, aligning conservation goals with rural revitalization. This case highlights the effectiveness of multi-stakeholder collaboration and integrated community engagement in advancing both ecological restoration and social sustainability in coastal wetlands.
