New infrastructure, safer living conditions in Srbac

December 22, 2025

Every morning, Danka Mitrova Street in the heart of the Municipality of Srbac echoes with the voices of hundreds of children heading to the nearby kindergarten. Not long ago, their walk to kindergarten meant passing through mud and puddles caused by sewerage problems. Today, they walk along a clean, well-arranged and dry street that has been completely transformed.

Thanks to the Municipal Environmental Governance Project (MEG 2), the once neglected Danka Mitrova Street has been reconstructed into a modern, safe and functional street adapted to the needs of children and all residents. The project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina and jointly funded by the Government of Switzerland, Sweden, the Government of the Czech Republic, as well as the European Union.

The full reconstruction of the street included the construction of sanitary and stormwater sewerage, modern sidewalks, road surfacing and the installation of public lighting. The changes are visible at first glance, but more importantly, they are reflected in the everyday lives of local residents.

“We used to deal with puddles, mud and unpleasant smells. Now we have a clean, orderly and well-lit street where it is a pleasure to live. There is also a kindergarten here attended by several hundred children, and for us the most important thing is that they are now safe and growing up in a healthy environment.”
Draško Momić, President of the Srbac Local Community (MZ)

This street is also home to the public institution “Naša radost”, a kindergarten that takes care of hundreds of children every day. For parents and staff, the new infrastructure means fewer worries, greater safety and better conditions for raising children.

“Before, we struggled with water and dampness, and now we have conditions that children deserve. Parents are grateful, and it is easier for us to organise daily activities and maintain hygiene.”

The MEG 2 project has brought significant benefits for residents across the Municipality of Srbac, from the urban centre to more remote suburban settlements.

In addition to the reconstruction of Danka Mitrova Street, MEG 2 also supported the expansion and modernisation of the water supply network managed by the public utility company “Vodovod” AD Srbac. The network was expanded in the local community of Nova Ves, as well as in the settlements of Srbac Selo, Kaoci, Vlaknica and Save Vujanovića Žuće Street.

In Nova Ves, a main pipeline 1,850 metres long and an additional 1,150 metres of network were constructed, enabling water connections for 20 new households. Families that previously relied on alternative water sources now have stable access to safe drinking water.

In the settlements of Srbac Selo, Kaoci and Vlaknica, a new pipeline approximately two kilometres long stabilised the operation of pressure-boosting facilities, ensuring a more reliable and higher-quality water supply.

In the urban part of Srbac, Save Vujanovića Žuće Street received a new water supply network that includes a fire hydrant system, the first of its kind in this part of the municipality, representing an important step forward in protecting people and property.

The Mayor of the Municipality of Srbac, Mlađan Dragosavljević, emphasised that MEG 2 is not only an infrastructure project, but also a foundation for systemic change.

“This project supports us in strengthening local administration capacities, improving transparency, ensuring responsible public financial management and enhancing communication with citizens. Through it, we also received significant grant funding of USD 140,000, which enabled us to implement three major infrastructure activities.”

One of the most advanced aspects of the MEG 2 project in Srbac is the introduction of smart metering and IoT technologies for monitoring water consumption. With this equipment, the public utility company “Vodovod” AD Srbac can now remotely read consumption, allowing for more accurate billing, faster fault detection and more efficient system management.

“We can proudly say that we have successfully implemented investments across three activities. For us, MEG 2 is not just a project, but a strong partnership that guides us towards modern local governance standards and motivates us to build an open, efficient and accountable Municipality of Srbac,” Dragosavljević concluded.

Based on progress achieved in good governance and environmental protection through the MEG 2 project, eight local self-government units in Bosnia and Herzegovina secured grant funding for the implementation of their priority environmental infrastructure projects, totalling USD 1,030,000.
