Reliable meteorological data provide the foundation for timely warnings, more accurate weather forecasts and more effective management of flood risks and other extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent and severe due to climate change.

To further strengthen weather monitoring and early warning capacities, ten new automatic meteorological stations have been installed across Republika Srpska. Their commissioning has significantly enhanced the meteorological observation network, creating the conditions for improved weather monitoring, more accurate forecasting and timely information for citizens and relevant institutions.

The new stations have been installed in Banja Luka, Doboj, Novi Grad, Prijedor, Gradiška, Drinić, Ugljevik, Foča and Nevesinje, while an additional station will be installed on Jahorina in the coming period. The locations were selected based on climatic characteristics, river basins, and assessments of flood risk and vulnerability to other hazardous weather events.

At several locations, the existing monitoring system has been upgraded, while in Ugljevik, Drinić, Nevesinje and Jahorina, modern meteorological monitoring has been established for the first time.

The automatic meteorological stations provide continuous measurements of air temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and the amount and intensity of precipitation. All data are publicly available in real time through the website of the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of Republika Srpska.

In addition to strengthening the early warning system, these data provide an important basis for planning in agriculture, water and natural resource management, energy, tourism and other sectors that depend on reliable meteorological information. By enhancing capacities for weather monitoring and forecasting, institutions are better equipped to make informed decisions, while communities become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

The installation of the new meteorological stations was carried out under the Green Climate Fund project "Scaling up Climate Resilient Flood Risk Management in Bosnia and Herzegovina," implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The value of the equipment exceeds BAM 800,000.

Together with partners, UNDP will continue supporting the modernization of meteorological and hydrological monitoring systems to further strengthen early warning capacities and enhance community resilience to climate risks.
