Striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Japanese government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Africa Bureau, has significantly contributed to advancing humanitarian, developmental, and peace efforts in Africa through various projects. These projects, supported by Japanese government funding from 2023 to 2024, focus on areas such as peacebuilding, economic recovery, counter-terrorism, United Nations Peacekeeping Operations training, refugee resettlement, disaster recovery, and electoral system transparency.

Policy-level cooperation is maintained through the African Development Conference (TICAD), jointly organized by UNDP and the Japanese government. UNDP, as a co-organizer of TICAD since 1993, actively engages in high-level and ministerial meetings, promoting action plan monitoring and stakeholder involvement, thereby strengthening partnerships between Japan and Africa.

The implementation of Japan-supported projects involves key partnerships with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japanese civil society organizations (CSOs), and private enterprises.

Benin

Project to Support Peace Consolidation through Capacity Building of the Post-Conflict Demining Training Center (CPADD)

The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce the number of mine-related deaths and disabilities and discourage the use of these mines, through strengthening the capacity of the Center.

Central African Republic

Supporting the Vulnerable Population in Bria for Economic Recovery and Community Resilience

The overall objective of the project is to support the vulnerable population in Bria, including IDPs, returnees who were forcibly displaced, as well as ex-combatants to re-establish sustainable livelihoods and pave the way for stabilization, economic recovery and to contribute to prevention of radicalization.

Cameroon

Recovery in the South-West Region through Rehabilitation of Health Centres and Water Points

The overall objective of the project is to enhance the resilience of populations in the crisis-affected South-West region of Cameroon and accelerate recovery through the rehabilitation of essential infrastructure to promote basic service delivery in the areas of Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

Mali

Support the Mali Peacekeeping School to strengthen the conflict prevention and management capacities of ECOWAS countries

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the strengthening of the capacities of ECOWAS States in terms of peace support in a context of increasing insecurity in the region.

Nigeria (North-East)

Fast track of early and sustainable recovery of conflict-affected communities in the North-East Nigeria

This project aims to support stabilization and early recovery in the conflict-affected communities in the north-east Nigeria.

Nigeria

Enhancing National Capacities for Counter-Violent Extremism, Anti-Piracy and Protection of Civilians Project

The overall objective of this project is to improve the national capacities of Nigeria, ECOWAS and Gulf of Guinea (GoG) countries’ efforts to decrease the influence and activities of violent extremism and pirates, as well as protect civilians in armed conflicts.

Senegal

Strengthening Human Security in priority municipalities through enhanced social protection and increased resilience to socio-economic insecurity in Senegal

The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the resilience of communities in the five priority municipalities with enhanced social protection programs to
support disaster preparedness.

Togo

STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITIES OF THE PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS TRAINING CENTER OF TOGO (PHASE 2)

This project aims to provide Togo's Peacekeeping Operations Training Center (CEOMP) with additional capacities to train troops for pre-deployment to peacekeeping missions.

South Sudan

Stabilization of conflict affected communities for a dignified and sustained return of displaced populations in Eastern Equatoria and Upper Nile States

The overall objective of this project is to Establish and operationalize Police Community Relations Committees (PCRCs) in Eastern Equatoria and Upper Nile States.

Ghana

Preventing Violent Extremism, Radicalization and Small Arms Proliferation in the Sahel and adjoining Coastal Countries in West Africa

The objective of the project is to improve knowledge and information-sharing among security personnel and civil society actors.

Guinea-Bissa

Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Governance to Prevent Corruption and Build Peace

The objective of the project is to improve the quality of public services delivered to the population through enhancing the State’s capacities to fight corruption.

Central African Republic

Enhancing the Resilience and Supporting the Inclusive Economic Development of Vulnerable People

The project’s overall objective is to support vulnerable populations especially women, youth at risk, ex-combatants, returnees and IDPs to actively participate in economic
activities in Bangui, Mbaiki and Bossangoa.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Supporting the organization of peaceful and inclusive elections in conflict-affected areas in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023 (the Project for Electoral Assistance)

The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the organization of peaceful and inclusive elections in 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Strengthen technical and operational capacities of local institutions to implement the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Programme (P-DDRCS) in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri

The specific objective of the project is to strengthen technical and operational capacities of local mandated institutions to implement the P-DDRCS in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri.

Ethiopia

Support to an Inclusive and Effective National Dialogue Process in Ethiopia

The objective of the project is to Assist the ENDC in becoming a more capable, transparent, and ultimately, trusted, and credible /legitimate institution.

Kenya

Strengthening Capacity for Maritime Disaster Risk Management, Peace, and Security in Kenya

The overall objective of this project is to enhance national capacities for disaster management, peace and security strengthened.

Malawi

Promoting Peace and Socio-Economic Empowerment through National Peace Architecture and Sustainable Livelihoods

The specific objective of the project is to strengthen national and district coordination mechanisms in peacebuilding and conflict prevention through the establishment of the District Peace and Unity Committees (DPUCs) and related community-level mechanisms in two districts.

Mozambique

Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Infrastructure for Stabilization In The Province Of Cabo Delgado

The objective of the project is to re-establish the government’s presence, restore basic services and livelihoods and contribute to protecting and resuming economic development investments from public and private sectors in the Province of Cabo Delgado.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Capacity Building Project Phase Two (ZIM-ECO)

The ZIM-ECO Project seeks to enhance the effectiveness of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission by strengthening its capacity.

Enhancing Stabilization and Human Security in the Lake Chad Basin

This project aims to improve human security and the social contract between States and communities in conflict-affected communities in Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

The main objective of the proposed support towards the establishment of the pan-African start-up ecosystem will be to nurture and capacitate African start-ups for growth and impactful development.

République Démocratique du Congo (projet d’assistance électorale)

Soutenir l’organisation d’élections apaisées et inclusives dans les régions touchées par le conflit dans l’est de la République démocratique du Congo en 2023 (projet d’assistance électorale)

L’objectif global de ce projet est de contribuer à l’organisation d’élections apaisées et inclusives en 2023 en République démocratique du Congo en vue de consolider la paix et la stabilisation, en renforçant la participation citoyenne et en prévenant les conflits avant, pendant et après les élections.

Togo

Renforcement des capacités du Centre d'entraînement aux opérations de maintien de la paix (phase 2)

Ce projet vise à doter le Centre d’entraînement aux opérations de maintien de la paix (CEOMP) de capacités supplémentaires pour former des troupes en vue de leur pré-déploiement dans les operations de maintien de la paix.

Cameroun, Tchad, Niger

Renforcer la stabilisation et la sécurité humaine dans le bassin du lac Tchad

Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité humaine et le contrat social entre les États et les communautés touchées par les conflits au Cameroun, au Tchad et au Niger en soutenant les infrastructures de services sociaux essentiels, en fournissant aux ménages des moyens d’existence immédiats et en améliorant la coopération, la coordination et le dialogue transfrontaliers.

Mali

Appui à l’École de maintien de la paix pour renforcer les capacités des pays de la CEDEAO en matière de prévention et de gestion des conflits

L’objectif global de la proposition est de contribuer au renforcement des capacités des pays de la CEDEAO en matière de soutien à la paix, dans un contexte d’insécurité croissante dans la region.

Sénégal

Renforcer la sécurité humaine dans les communes prioritaires par une meilleure protection sociale et une résilience accrue à l’insécurité socioéconomique au Sénégal

Améliorer la résilience des communautés dans les cinq communes prioritaires avec des programmes de protection sociale renforcée pour soutenir la préparation aux catastrophes.

République centrafricaine

Renforcer la résilience et soutenir le développement économique inclusif des populations vulnérables

L’objectif global du projet est d’aider les populations vulnérables, notamment les femmes, les jeunes à risque, les anciens combattants, les rapatriés et les personnes déplacées, à participer activement aux activités économiques à Bangui, Mbaiki et Bossangoa.

République centrafricaine

Soutenir les populations vulnérables de Bria à l’appui du relèvement économique et de la résilience des communautés

L’objectif global du projet est de soutenir les populations vulnérables de Bria, notamment les personnes déplacées à l’intérieur du pays, les rapatriés déplacés de force et les anciens combattants, afin de rétablir des moyens d’existence durables, d’ouvrir la voie à la stabilisation et à la relance économique et de contribuer à la prévention de la radicalisation.
