October 17, 2022

Following up the Youth4Climate initiative launched in 2020 and the first Special Report “Youth for Climate Action in Viet Nam”, which outlined the challenges faced by youth in undertaking climate action and highlighted the accelerators for youth action, a 3-day climate camp was co-organised by UNDP Viet Nam and the Department of Climate Change (DCC) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) from August 18th to August 20th, 2022. The National Writeshop for the updated Special Report on Youth Climate Action in Viet Nam was attended by more than 20 youth aged between 17 and 35 from all over the country, with the participation of leading experts on climate in Viet Nam.

  1. By attending all activities at the climate camp, participants aimed to co-create the updated Special Report Youth for Climate Action in Viet Nam 2022 with the following main outcomes:
  2. Map Accelerators and Bottlenecks for two new thematic areas
  3. Take stock of youth activities since the first Special Report “Youth Climate Action in Viet Nam” including youth committed actions following the Youth-led Road Map for Climate Action
  4. Formulate concrete actions for youth to contribute to the net-zero commitment made at COP26.

The National Writeshop provided an unheard-of forum for engaging discussions among all participants, where young people had the chance to hear directly from a variety of high-level speakers who actively participate in climate actions in Viet Nam.

Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Representative of UNDP Viet Nam emphasized that the Writeshop took place in the context of countries preparing for COP27. As part of cooperative efforts with the Government of Vietnam, UNDP is “determined to foster an enabling environment for young citizens to participate in the transition to a greener and cleaner future,” he stated.

Mr. Tang The Cuong, Head of MONRE's Department of Climate Change stressed that “Young people must promote the role of being impulsive, dynamic, and creative at the forum on responding to climate change to collectively contribute to the response to climate change in Vietnam, strengthen cooperation with youth in the ASEAN region, and participate in global youth forums.”

Prof. Tran Thuc, Vice Chairman of the Advisory Council of the National Committee on Climate Change, shared that the ideas of young people are key ideas representing the voice of youth and marking their contributions to shaping the future roadmap for not only national but global climate response.

After receiving all the ideas and inputs from the participants from the Writeshop, the lead author consulted with relevant external stakeholders to draft the content that accurately reflects the results from the Youth4Climate National Writeshop 2022. Based on the feedback received and the consultation with UNDP experts and MONRE officers, the lead author has proceeded to the final adjustments of the report and the youth statement. The final version of the official report is expected to be completed in October.
