UNDP Uzbekistan at Eco Expo Central Asia 2026 and Eighth GEF Assembly in Samarkand

May 31, 2026

In June 2026, Samarkand will become one of the world’s leading international platforms for discussions on environmental sustainability, climate change, and sustainable development. The city will simultaneously host two major events - the international environmental exhibition Eco Expo Central Asia 2026 and a series of thematic sessions held within the framework of the Eighth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Eco Expo Central Asia 2026 is one of the largest international environmental exhibitions in Central Asia. The event will bring together experts, researchers, government representatives, international organizations, businesses, and civil society stakeholders to showcase and discuss innovative solutions in environmental protection, green economy development, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, chemical safety, and environmental innovation.

One of the exhibition’s key events will be the special session “Islands of Sustainability: Preserving Ecosystem Services in the Lower Amu Darya and Aral Sea Basin,” scheduled for 2 June. Participants will discuss practical solutions and partnership opportunities aimed at restoring and conserving ecosystems in the Aral Sea region, supporting biodiversity, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, and advancing long-term regional sustainability.

On 3 June, the official launch of the academic module “Biodiversity Finance” will take place. This new educational initiative is designed to strengthen the financial knowledge and competencies of professionals working in biodiversity conservation and nature protection across Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The event will present the objectives of the module, its curriculum, and its significance for advancing green economy principles and strengthening mechanisms for financing nature conservation.

Also on 3 June, a session entitled “Official Launch of Biodiversity Finance Academic Module” will be held. Discussions will focus on improving the national chemicals management system, addressing existing challenges, exchanging international experience, and identifying future priorities in this area.

On 4 June, participants will attend the session “Scaling Locally Led Environmental Solutions: Experience and Results of the GEF Small Grants Programme in Uzbekistan and Launch of Operational Phase 8.” The event will highlight the achievements of community-led environmental initiatives, present lessons learned, and explore new opportunities for future action. It will also demonstrate the effectiveness of the GEF Small Grants Programme and its contribution to the country’s sustainable development agenda.

Another major international event taking place in Samarkand will be the Eighth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which will be hosted in Uzbekistan for the first time. Held every four years, this prestigious forum serves as a key platform for shaping global environmental policy, discussing environmental financing, and defining priorities for international cooperation in support of sustainable development.

Within the framework of the GEF Assembly, the event “Supporting the Implementation of the Stockholm Convention through Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste in Uzbekistan” will take place on 3 June. Participants will discuss the management of hazardous chemicals and waste, the protection of the environment and public health, the implementation of international environmental commitments, and pathways toward achieving sustainable development goals.

On 4 June, the session “From Corridors to Communities: A Regional Vision for Wildlife and Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia” will be held. The discussion will focus on biodiversity conservation, the protection of rare and endangered species, the development of transboundary ecological corridors, and the role of local communities in safeguarding the region’s natural heritage.
