Arkhanhelske, Kherson Oblast, Ukraine, 23 July 2026 — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Ukraine Community Recovery Fund (UCRF), has opened a modern modular educational space at the Arkhanhelske Vocational Agricultural Lyceum in Kherson Oblast. The new learning space provides safer and more comfortable conditions for students while helping train skilled specialists needed by Ukraine’s agricultural sector.

The initiative is part of UNDP’s Area-Based Recovery (ABR) efforts, which support the restoration of essential services and infrastructure in war-affected communities across Ukraine. By rebuilding educational institutions and expanding access to vocational training, ABR contributes to local economic recovery, workforce development and the return of people displaced by the war.

UNDP and its partners invested US$240,000 in the construction of the modular facility and an additional $50,000 in supplies and furnishings. The new premises include training workshops for future chefs and mechanics specializing in the repair of agricultural machinery and equipment.

Founded in 1884, Arkhanhelske Vocational Agricultural Lyceum is one of Ukraine’s oldest vocational education institutions. Today, it offers training in agricultural occupations, including tractor driving, agricultural machinery and equipment repair technicians, and category ‘C’ vehicle operation. The lyceum also provides vocational training in cooking and baking.

In May 2022, the lyceum’s academic building and its dormitory were severely damaged by shelling, making in-person learning impossible. The new modular facility enables students to continue their education in safe and appropriate conditions while longer-term recovery efforts are in progress.

Auke Lootsma, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, emphasized the importance of integrated recovery efforts. “UNDP’s Area-Based Recovery helps create the conditions for internally displaced people, particularly young people, to return to their communities,” he said. “By restoring access to quality vocational education, we are providing them with a safer learning environment and equipping them with skills that are in high demand on Ukraine’s labour market. Strengthening education and expanding employment opportunities are essential for building the long-term resilience and prosperity of communities.”

The renovation and refurbishment of the Arkhanhelske Vocational Agricultural Lyceum were carried out with support from UNDP in Ukraine and funding from the UCRF. This initiative is part of a joint project implemented by UNDP in partnership with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
