Thanks to a generous donation, UNDP has provided equipment to improve the Japanese language classroom at Kyiv Gymnasium of Oriental Languages №1.
Japanese company enhances learning facilities for 150 Ukrainian students mastering Japanese
February 5, 2025

Kyiv, 5 February 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine (UNDP) recently supported the ceremonial reopening of the Japanese language classroom in the Kyiv Gymnasium of Oriental Languages №1. The learning facility was enhanced with new equipment procured by UNDP with generous funding from a Japanese company.
The JPY 1 million (approximately $6,200) donation from the Japanese company allowed UNDP to equip the classroom with an interactive panel, a multifunction printer, an all-in-one computer, and student desks and chairs. These resources will enhance learning conditions for more than 150 students studying Japanese at the school.
The donation from the company was inspired by a visit to the gymnasium in June 2024 as part of a tour organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and supported by UNDP. Recognizing the gymnasium’s dedication to Japanese-language education, the company stepped forward to improve the school’s learning facilities.
In February 2022, just before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the school building suffered damage from a fire. Despite these challenges, the gymnasium has remained operational, although some renovations have been delayed due to the ongoing war. Today, the gymnasium has 1,100 students, who are mastering seven oriental languages.
Satoshi Kobayashi, the president of the Japanese company that made the donation, joined the event online, expressing his deepest respect for the courage and resilience of Ukrainians. “Even in times of war, it is our shared responsibility as a global community to ensure that children can learn in a safe environment and pursue their dreams,” Kobayashi said. “While our contribution may be modest, I sincerely hope it will play a small part in supporting the future of Ukrainian children.”
The commercial attaché of the Embassy of Japan, Hiraki Tadayoshi, reaffirmed Japan's unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing its commitment across recovery, development, cultural, and economic spheres.
“Japan’s support extends beyond government efforts,” Hiraki said. “Through individual initiatives, private companies, NGOs, and municipalities, the people of Japan, though geographically distant, remain close at heart.”
“Today, as we celebrate Ukrainian students learning Japanese and exploring our culture, we’re not only enriching their education but also strengthening the bonds that unite our nations.”
Ryo Koba, Senior Director for Global Strategy (Europe) at JETRO, emphasized the gymnasium's crucial role in fostering cultural exchange and strengthening business ties between Ukraine and Japan. “Business thrives on a foundation of trust and strong human relationships," Koba said. "These relationships are built through shared values and mutual cultural appreciation." “From this perspective, I believe the gymnasium stimulates business cooperation between our countries and supports Ukraine’s economic recovery.”
Oksana Proskura, Director of Kyiv Gymnasium of Oriental Languages No. 1, highlighted that Japanese has been taught at the school since 1991 using proprietary programs and methodologies. She emphasized that the institution actively fosters cultural ties between Ukraine and Japan.
"We’re committed to expanding cooperation with Japan and always warmly welcome representatives from this country to our gymnasium," Proskura said. "The contribution of the Japanese company is more than just support for our students – it’s a powerful symbol of solidarity that inspires and strengthens the bonds between our nations, which share many common values."
Mizuho Yokoi, a Programme Manager at UNDP Ukraine, highlighted the critical role of the private sector and expressed profound gratitude for this donation — the first instance of a Japanese private company supporting Ukraine's recovery through UNDP.
"This donation is a valuable testament to the strong partnership between Ukraine and Japan, showcasing how international cooperation can play a vital role in rebuilding efforts," Yokoi said.
