UNDP and Government of Turkmenistan discussed international experience on the integration of educational programs on human rights at the universities and institutes

Ashgabat, 18-20 October 2022: UNDP and the Working Group on Development of Educational Programmes on Human Rights conducted workshop on learning best international practices to integrate human rights educational courses at the universities and institutes of Turkmenistan.

The workshop is organized in the framework of the UNDP project: "Assistance in the Implementation of the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan in the area of human rights for 2021-2025" implemented jointly with the Institute of State, Law, and Democracy of Turkmenistan.

The workshop is delivered by the international expert on human rights education Aigul Kulnazarova.  Participants of the workshop were representatives of Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice,  Ministry of Education, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Prosecutor`s Office, Institute of State, Law and Democracy, Civil Service Academy under the President of Turkmenistan, Turkmen State University named after Mahtumkuli,  Institute of International Relations, International University for Humanities and Development, Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Institute of Education, and Bar Association of Turkmenistan. As a result of the workshop international expert will provide recommendation on the Draft of the Roadmap on the integration of human rights courses in undergraduate and graduate programs.

During the workshop participants also discussed relevance of introducing gender equality courses within the new educational programs on human rights.

The introduction of new human rights courses in undergraduate and graduate programmes at the universities and institutes of Turkmenistan will contribute to strengthen the professional development of students – future lawyers and policy makers – on human rights issues, thus contributing to implementation of the NHRAP for 2021-2025.

The NHRAP 2021-2025 adopted by the Government of Turkmenistan in April 2021 aims at strengthening the national system of provision and protection of human rights and liberties in Turkmenistan, implementation of the international obligations of the country in the given area, and the expansion of cooperation with the international organizations in the humanitarian sphere.

UNDP Turkmenistan provides support to the implementation of the NHRAP 2021-2025 in the framework of the project “Assistance in the realization National Action Plan of Turkmenistan in the Area of Human Rights for 2021-2025” jointly implemented with the Institute of State, Law, and Democracy of Turkmenistan. The project will focus on strengthening the national system of protection, promotion, and realization of human rights in Turkmenistan by harmonizing laws and practices in accordance with the country's international human rights obligations.
