Marking the International Desertification and Drought Day

On June 17, 2023, International Desertification and Drought Day, UNDP in Turkmenistan together with partners within the framework of the Aral Sea project, funded by the GEF launched a Poster contest as part of the global campaign #HerLand #HerRights to draw the attention of society to the environmental problems of desertification, depletion of soil fertility and land degradation leading to desertification and demonstrate how affected are women when land becomes degraded and water is scarce.
Today, we are happy to announce the winners of the Contest, whose great works helped demonstrate women and girls at the forefront of land restoration and drought resilience efforts.

Aysoltan Chariyeva - 2nd place winner
Bakydurdy Garayev - 3rd place winner
We would also like to acknowledge the following participants, who received the Originality and Creativity Award in the following categories:
Ayjahan Tagyyeva – “A call to protect nature through art of drawing”;
Ayjeren Nurakova – “The best content to highlight the importance of preserving ecosystems”;
Aynura Ovezmuhammedova - “The best booklet on the importance of preserving ecosystems through the eyes of young people”;
Gurbangul Saparova - “A call to save forests through the art of drawing”;
Ogulbibi Bayrammammedova – “Life cycle Nature-man”.
The award ceremony was held at the UN Premises in Ashgabat on the eve of the International Youth Day. The winners received prizes and certificates of appreciation presented by Rovshen Nurmuhammedov, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative in Turkmenistan.
The winners of the contest will be also invited to Lebap velayat to participate in the eco action dedicated to the International Day of the Forests, 21 March 2024. The selected posters will be part of an Exhibited organized within the framework of an eco-event to demonstrate the role of women in climate change action.
