UNDP Türkiye's message on the two major earthquakes that struck Türkiye on 6 February 2023

February 6, 2023

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and suffering following the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye. As part of the United Nations family, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) stands ready to support affected people in the coming days, weeks and months as they recover from this tragedy.

In addition to the urgent humanitarian needs, it is clear from the magnitude of the disaster and the vulnerability of the people affected that recovery will be long and requiring a lot of resources. UNDP will work alongside our humanitarian partners and coordinate with the UN Country teams to ensure affected people are supported in this process. Given the scale, we underline the urgent need for as much foreign assistance as possible.

As a development player, now, while the emergency response is underway, UNDP thinks ahead and prepares plans towards early recovery, late recovery and reconstruction, as these challenges will face us very soon and we need to be prepared.

UNDP stands ready to assist public institutions and municipalities of Türkiye in recovering from the short, medium and long-term economic and social effects of the disasters, by restoring livelihoods, reconstructing the infrastructure and building resilience. UNDP’s priority will be, as always, helping the most disadvantaged populations and aiming to leave no one behind.
