Bangkok, 19 October 2022. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to frame its cooperation in promoting human rights and sustainable development in Thailand. The MOU signing ceremony took place today at the office of NHRCT, Government Complex, Chaeng Wattana.

The MOU reaffirms mutual intention to support human rights for development. Several thematic areas for collaboration between the two organisations were also identified, such as the protection of human rights defenders, business and human rights, gender, rights of LGBTIs, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities to name a few.

Renaud Meyer, UNDP Representative in Thailand.

“UNDP is committed to a rights-based approach to development and places human rights at the heart of its work. As a constitutional body, the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand is a key partner for UNDP to promote and protect human rights in the country. To fulfill its mandate, UNDP needs a strong NHRC for an impactful collaboration that ensures the country meets its obligations on human rights and achieves the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, its Sustainable Development Goals and commitment to Leave No One Behind.” said Renaud Meyer, UNDP Representative in Thailand.

Over the past few years, UNDP and NHRCT have worked closely together to promote and protect human rights for all through awareness raising, peer to peer learning, capacity building on monitoring, investigations and reporting. Interventions at sub-national level have also reinforced human rights of local communities.

Pornprapai Ganjanarintr, Chairperson of NHRCT

The partnership between UNDP and NHRCT will not only enhance the organizations’ commitment to protect and promote human rights but also lead to concrete actions on advancing the realization of human rights in Thailand, a strong foundation underpinning the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
