Enhancing disaster preparedness and response for a more resilient Tanzania

Disasters can strike at any time and have devastating consequences. They can cause harm to the environment, economy, and human life, leaving communities vulnerable and struggling to recover. That's why the government of Tanzania in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and stakeholders have launched five Instruments on Disaster Management in Tanzania, aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and response planning across the country.

These five instruments include the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan (2022), the National Disaster Communication Strategy (2022), the National One Health Strategic Plan (2022-2027), the National Disaster Management Strategy (2022-2027), and the National Guide for Combating Criminal Activities in the Ocean and Great Lakes (2022). They are designed to provide guidance to responsible institutions in Tanzania to effectively respond to disasters and reduce associated risks.

The launch ceremony was officiated by His Excellency Kassim Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, who directed all local authorities to allocate funds and ensure they have the required amenities to cater to disaster victims in their areas. The Resident Representative of UNDP Tanzania urged key stakeholders to hold close collaboration in implementing the instruments, stating that "collaboration from all stakeholders will ensure response mechanisms to disasters are in place and eventually protect vulnerable groups from risks associated with such calamities."

The instruments align with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the National Disaster Management Policy of 2004, and the Disaster Management Act No. 6 of the year 2022. Effective disaster management requires collaboration and coordination across multiple sectors and stakeholders. UNDP works closely with the government, civil society organizations, and other partners to ensure that the instruments on Disaster Management are effectively implemented and that all stakeholders are engaged in the process.

Together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for Tanzania, one that is better equipped to respond to the challenges of the 21st century. Let us work towards creating a safer and more prepared Tanzania for all.
