The energy landscape of Tanzania is at a crossroads, and the choices made today will shape the country's future for generations to come. With a growing dependence on fossil fuels but a hopeful vision of accessible, reliable, and sustainable energy services by 2030, Tanzania's energy trajectory is at a critical juncture. The nation's determination to achieve ambitious targets, including producing 113 TWh of electricity demand from renewable sources by 2050, presents not just a challenge, but an opportunity – an opportunity for the youth to take center stage in driving the energy transition and propelling Tanzania towards fulfilling its clean, affordable energy goals. At the heart of this transition stands the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), shoulder to shoulder with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Ministry of Energy, and with funding support from the European Union (EU), in the pursuit of a net-zero energy transition that doesn't leave anyone or any corner of the nation behind.  

One of the formidable challenges impeding widespread adoption of energy-efficient solutions in Tanzania is the lack of public awareness regarding the manifold social and economic benefits that come hand-in-hand with energy efficiency. To address this, UNDP is taking decisive steps to fortify the capacity of governmental bodies, businesses, and civil society organizations in implementing effective energy efficiency measures. Moreover, these efforts are distinctly designed to embrace inclusivity, empowering not just women and youth but also fostering a sense of collaboration across diverse segments of the population.

In a remarkable stride towards youth empowerment in Tanzania, UNDP proudly launched a groundbreaking scholarship program, tailored to nurture the education of young women in the energy sector. This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and co-piloted with the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), is a testament to UNDP's commitment to fostering a gender-responsive energy sector. Made possible by the steadfast backing of the European Union (EU), the scholarship program falls under the purview of the Energy Efficiency Action Plan, with a focus on honing skills and qualifications in Energy Management and Energy Audit, especially among women.

Beyond being a mere educational initiative, the scholarship program represents a resolute step towards propagating sustainable energy practices and actualizing Tanzania's sustainable development objectives. The pivotal role of women in steering the transition towards clean energy cannot be overstated – women are not just consumers, but leaders, influencers, and the very backbone of this revolution. By endowing women with the knowledge and tools they need, we can accelerate the shift towards a low-carbon economy.

The scholarship program is not just a ticket to education; it's a ticket to transformation. It is an invitation for up to ten bright, young women to embark on a journey towards a Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy Engineering. Through education and skill-building, these individuals will be poised to actively shape the energy landscape of Tanzania. By nurturing the capabilities of these promising minds, UNDP is not just producing specialists and policymakers, but forging leaders who will command the reins of the energy sector with the acumen needed to tackle its challenges head-on.
