About us

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been a trusted development partner to Rwanda since 1977, working alongside the Government of Rwanda, the United Nations system, civil society, the private sector, and communities to advance sustainable and inclusive development.

Aligned with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation II, UNDP supports inclusive economic growth, climate resilience, accountable governance, and social inclusion to advance sustainable development and improve quality of life for all Rwandans.

Our role in Rwanda

UNDP’s work in Rwanda is guided by the Country Programme Document (CPD) 2025–2029, aligned with the National Strategy for Transformation II (NST2) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2025–2029 .

Through an integrated and portfolio-based approach, UNDP focuses on four interconnected areas:

  • Inclusive and resilient economic transformation, with an emphasis on private sector development, green jobs, innovation, and sustainable financing
  • Climate resilience and environmental sustainability, including nature protection, climate adaptation and mitigation, and disaster risk management
  • Transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance, strengthening the rule of law, access to justice, decentralization, and citizen participation
  • Social inclusion and cohesion, ensuring that women, youth, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable communities benefit equitably from development

Across all areas, UNDP applies a human rights-based and gender-transformative approach, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Partnerships and coordination

UNDP works within the United Nations “Delivering as One” framework in Rwanda, contributing to coherent, results-oriented UN support aligned with national priorities. As part of the UN Country Team, UNDP collaborates closely with sister UN agencies, development partners, international financial institutions, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector to maximize collective impact.

UNDP also hosts and supports the UN Resident Coordinator system, playing a key role in coordination, policy coherence, and joint programming across the UN system.

Driving innovation and sustainable impact

UNDP Rwanda leverages innovation, digitalization, development finance, and systems thinking to address complex development challenges. This includes advancing innovative financing mechanisms, supporting green and climate finance, scaling digital and data-driven solutions, and fostering South-South and triangular cooperation.

By connecting policy to practice and strengthening national and subnational capacities, UNDP supports Rwanda to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future, in line with the 2030 Agenda and Rwanda’s long-term development vision.
