Drawing on extensive research, field visits, and good practices from around the world, the publication has two main goals:
First, to assess the impact of environmental factors and extreme weather—often driven by climate change—on elections and to outline how electoral stakeholders can better prepare for such events throughout the electoral cycle.
Second, to identify and promote good practices that enable electoral stakeholders—including electoral management bodies, governments, electoral assistance providers, political parties, the media, and civil society organizations—to minimize negative environmental impacts across the electoral cycle.
The guide covers all phases of the electoral cycle, providing stakeholders with practical guidance for evaluating trade-offs and understanding the potential risks associated with seemingly “environmentally friendly” solutions. By taking a holistic view, the initiative supports informed decision-making that includes environmental considerations, without compromising the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.
