Launch and Inception Workshop of Women Environmental Human Rights Defenders (WEHRD) Project: Inception Workshop for Gender-Responsive Climate Action

November 16, 2025

Manila, 10 November 2025 – UNDP conducted the Women Environmental Human Rights Defenders (WEHRD) project launch and inception workshop to strengthen women’s leadership in climate advocacy and gender-responsive environmental governance. The event was attended by nine (9) women civil society organization partners and three (3) government allies. This initiative responds to the urgent need for inclusive climate action and protection of environmental defenders in the Philippines.

“Let us remember, when we work to protect women environment defenders, we are not only safeguarding individual rights, we are also defending the future of our planet. Their courage, leadership, and vision for a just and green future for the Philippines must be met equally with our support, solidarity, and action.” Said Mr. Knut Ostby, UNDP Resident Representative, in his opening remarks.

Apart from the official launch, the event also featured a workshop for the rapid assessment of the capacities and needs of WEHRDs, as well as the presentation and validation of the highlights of the study on the policy and legal framework for women environmental defenders in the Philippines.

“Women are at the frontlines of environmental protection, yet they face systematic risks and violence. This project ensures their voices influence policies for a greener, safer future.” Shared by Atty. Antonio Gabriel La Vina, Executive Director of the Manila Observatory.

Moving forward, Manila Observatory, UNDP’s partner for the WEHRD Project, will lead the rollout of capacity-building programs, digital monitoring tools, and policy dialogues to ensure women defenders are safer, more connected and influential in shaping environmental governance.

This event was made possible with support from the Government of Denmark, Luxembourg, and the Republic of Korea and will be implemented until June 2026.
