Launched in 2023 through a strong partnership between the United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Youth Service Scheme, with the support of public and private sector institutions, the National Youth Service Graduate Programme (NaYSGP) is fast becoming a game-changer in tackling graduate unemployment in The Gambia.

Designed to bridge the gap between graduation and employment, NaYSGP offers young graduates a one-year paid internship that equips them with practical skills, professional experience, and the confidence to transition into the workforce. More than just an internship, the programme is creating real pathways to opportunity and empowering young Gambians to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The successful deployment of the programme’s Second Cohort marks another important milestone in this journey.

Between August and December 2025, 100 graduates were deployed to public and private institutions across the country. Despite challenges such as limited placement opportunities and the need to match academic qualifications with institutional needs, the programme achieved 100% placement of all participants, a remarkable achievement that underscores the commitment of partners and host institutions.

Today, 86% of the cohort are actively completing their placements, gaining hands-on experience, supporting day-to-day operations, and developing workplace skills that go far beyond the classroom. Across ministries, agencies, and private companies, these young professionals are contributing to projects, improving service delivery, and building the foundations of their careers.

Even more encouraging are the programme’s early employment outcomes. Twelve graduates secured employment before completing their internship, a strong sign that NaYSGP is enhancing visibility, building confidence, and increasing employability among young people. For many, the programme has become a launchpad, opening doors that may otherwise have remained closed.

NaYSGP is also advancing gender equality and inclusion. Women make up 58% of the Second Cohort, reflecting the programme’s commitment to equitable access to opportunities and empowering young women to take active roles in shaping The Gambia’s future.

While a few participants exited the programme due to other opportunities, these transitions reflect the broader purpose of NaYSGP: enabling graduates to pursue pathways aligned with their ambitions and aspirations to contribute to national development.

The story of NaYSGP’s Second Cohort is one of resilience, growth, and promise. It is the story of graduates stepping boldly into opportunity, institutions opening their doors, and partnerships delivering progress. As these young professionals continue their journeys, they carry with them the experience, confidence, and skills needed to shape their communities and drive The Gambia’s development forward.
