New UNDP assessment warns of major socio-economic fallout from Middle East escalation

April 1, 2026

A new UNDP assessment warns that the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East could significantly disrupt development across the Arab States region, reversing more than a year of economic growth and deepening existing vulnerabilities.

According to the analysis, the crisis could result in substantial GDP losses, sharp increases in unemployment, and push up to 4 million additional people into poverty. The findings also point to broader setbacks in human development, trade, and economic stability across several subregions, with the most severe impacts expected in the Levant and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The report highlights how conflict and instability continue to place enormous pressure on economies and communities already facing structural challenges, and underscores the urgent need for resilience, regional cooperation, and long-term development solutions.
