Opening Remarks by Mr James George at the 2023 Youth National Dialogue

December 7, 2023

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in China, James George, delivers opening remarks at the 6th Youth National Dialogue in China.

Dear youth entrepreneurs,

Good morning,

I’m delighted to join you today at the 6th Youth National Dialogue!

Climate change is one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, with global temperatures hitting record highs and extreme weather events on the rise, we must act now if we are to have any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and reducing emissions by over half by 2030 - less than seven years away.

Climate action can’t wait.

As UN chief António Guterres recently emphasized at COP28, which is happening now in Dubai, “No more delays. No more foot-dragging. "

However, we can’t do this without you, the youth.

We are witnessing the largest generation of young people in history. You, the young change-makers, are central to the Sustainable Development Goals.

You are more connected and more innovative than previous generations. Indeed, you have the potential and tools to address the climate challenges we are facing.

The planet needs you more than ever.

Since its beginning, UNDP has always valued the creativity and vitality of young people, especially in China, home to the second-largest youth population in the world.

Along with partners, we are not only working for youth but, most importantly, with youth across a range of areas, empowering them to achieve the SDGs through innovation and entrepreneurship.

One of our initiatives that does this is the Youth Co:Lab.

Co-lead by UNDP and Citi Foundation, Youth Co:Lab started its journey 6 years ago.

Its annual flagship event, the Youth National Dialogue, has brought together governments, private sectors, incubators, and financial institutions to boost young people’s entrepreneurial skills and guide business models for SDG social impact.

"We are witnessing the largest generation of young people in history. You, the young change-makers, are central to the Sustainable Development Goals."

In 2019, we were delighted to have SCLSCC join our journey.

Today, with 60 young social entrepreneurs from 30 exceptional start-ups gathered here, we sincerely believe your innovations and actions could hold the key to finding positive solutions and getting Climate Action back on track.

In the past 5 years, we have seen many inspiring role models in our fellow youth. I’m sure you will be inspired by their stories later in the keynote sessions.

Their stories remind us that young people, despite facing different challenges, are still the most innovative, creative, and resilient forces in driving development progress.

Young entrepreneurs,

When you are pursuing business innovation, please keep these two qualities ingrained in your work plans: inclusiveness and sustainability.

Root SDGs in your entrepreneurship journey and ensure that no one is left behind.

Congratulations on being selected for the 2023 National Dialogue and I hope you will enjoy the upcoming three days, get inspired by peers, and learn from mentors.

You are the future leaders and can help build a long-lasting legacy for generations to come.

I am very much looking forward to hearing your brilliant ideas in the following days.

Last but not least, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, China Soong Ching Ling Science and Culture Center for Young People, and Citibank China for continuously hosting this event in the past years.

We deeply appreciate all our partners’ dedicated support to this endeavor and look forward to continued collaboration for years to come.

Thank you!
