United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Kazakhstan, Katarzyna Wawiernia, met with the newly appointed Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mr. Yerlan Nysanbaev. The meeting aimed to discuss further collaboration, particularly on climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development initiatives.

Katarzyna Wawiernia commended Kazakhstan on its bold pledge towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The nation’s transition towards a green economy, notably through deep decarbonization of its energy sector, aligns with UNDP’s Country Programme Document (CPD) 2021-2025, and reflects the shared ambition of supporting a climate-resilient, low-carbon growth trajectory for Kazakhstan.

The discussions also touched on ongoing joint projects between UNDP and the Ministry, aiming at enhancing climate policy frameworks, improving greenhouse gas emission monitoring, and advancing the country’s biodiversity conservation efforts. Notable progress has been made in creating ecological corridors and enhancing protected natural areas, showcasing a mutual commitment to preserving Kazakhstan's unique ecosystems.

Furthermore, the dialogue explored future cooperation opportunities, such as the ambitious Turan Tiger reintroduction project, and discussed the potential of bolstering Kazakhstan's technical capacities in managing protected areas and responding to environmental crises like forest fires.
