Today the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Togyzkumalak Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at preserving and promoting Kazakhstan's cultural heritage, with a focus on the traditional game of Togyzkumalak.

Togyzqumalaq, recognized by UNESCO in 2020 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, symbolizes strategic thinking, intellectual engagement, and social interaction that transcends the borders of one country.

“This collaboration reflects our dedication to promoting cultural heritage and engaging communities through the rich traditions of Togyzkumalak,” said Katarzyna Wawiernia, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan. “Together, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of Kazakh heritage while inspiring youth to embrace intellectual games.”

The Memorandum of Understanding includes a comprehensive cooperation programme that provides support for organizing intellectual game events, promoting Toguzkumalak on national and international platforms, and developing cultural and educational initiatives such as workshops and masterclasses. These efforts will help deepen understanding of the historical significance of the game and its relevance in modern times. Additionally, the agreement includes joint projects aimed at fostering cultural exchange, as well as regular meetings to ensure progress and effective coordination.

Alikhan Baimenov, President of the World Togyzqumalaq Federation, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Togyzqumalaq is more than a game; it is a valuable educational tool. It develops patience, consistency, and strategic thinking, while instilling respect for our culture.”

This cooperation between UNDP and the World Togyzqumalaq Federation is expected to contribute to their shared mission of fostering a culture of learning and respect for Kazakhstan's intellectual heritage.
