30 Civil Society Organizations Chosen to Support SDG Campaign in Indonesia

August 4, 2021

Jakarta, 4 August 2021—30 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from across Indonesia have been selected to work with Tadamon Crowdfunding Academy, to develop an impactful campaign in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda.

UNDP, together with Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Indonesia’s largest crowdfunding platform Kitabisa will support the campaign, with financing contribution from the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD), under the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The campaign development is part of a larger initiative to support the CSOs in financing their projects and grow their community, with more visibility, partners and donors.

The Academy is part of the Empowerment for Poverty Reduction Program spearheaded by the ISFD and IsDB. The  initiative focuses on poverty alleviation and develops CSO capacity to improve the wellbeing of communities in remote areas. Some of its activities include education for refugees, job creation, building resilience, and livelihood development.

Speaking during the launching, IsDB Director of Resilience and Social Development Mr. Syed Quadri, said, "Given the importance of partnership for achieving the SDGs targets, I'm delighted to see that the transnational aggregated platform is known as Tadamon, or Solidarity in Arabic, will be indeed an effective vehicle that equips CSOs in 57 OIC Member Countries by providing visibility, knowledge, and funding."

Senior Program Management Specialist of ISFD, Mr. Mohamed Mustafa Jawabreh echoed his words and noted the project’s focus on development.

"ISFD is sponsoring Tadamon based on its importance and impact on supporting the national development plans and efforts of MCs in reducing poverty through the improvement of the socio-economic wellbeing of hard-to-reach communities, building the resilience of societies, and responding directly to the actual needs of the communities in Member Countries," he said.

The 30 CSOs were selected from nearly 100 through a rigorous vetting process involving presentation of learning materials and work assignments under the guidance of leading crowdfunding experts. Participants submitted campaigns on issues ranging from anti-corruption, and economic development to education and empowerment of women. It also included campaigns focusing on empowering people with disabilities.

Following the eight-day training program, 19 SDG campaigns went live starting from the holy month of Ramadan until the month of the Hajj pilgrimage. A total of IDR 300 million (approximately USD 21,000) was collected from 10,000 contributors from various socio-economic backgrounds. The Program is also in partnership with Kaya Platform, a global learning platform of the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, and LaunchGood, one of the world's leading faith-based crowdfunding platforms focused on the Muslim community.

Among the selected CSOs is Hutan Itu Indonesia, which proposed a forest adoption crowdfunding platform project where users can adopt forests or make a donation to protect a tree. Another CSO, Munashoroh Indonesia Foundation, has provided a scholarship to rural children and is raising funds to develop a leadership camp project.

"The Program is well aligned with the IsDB Group's new business model, which seeks to unlock the potential of the grassroots stakeholders, capacitate them and mobilize them to be strong development actors," Regional Manager of the IsDB Regional Hub Indonesia, Mr. Salah Jelassi,  said.

"We are thrilled to support this initiative as it taps into the power of innovation through crowdfunding and youth  creativity in addressing the multidimensional issue of poverty. Through our partnership with organizations on the ground, together we can develop innovative and inclusive solutions to tackle this critical issue as we work with national governments to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals," said UNDP Indonesia Deputy Resident Representative, Ms. Sophie Kemkhadze.

UNDP Indonesia provides support for this crowdfunding learning initiative through its Innovative Financing Lab. The Lab has played a crucial role in identifying alternative sources of financing for SDGs achievement, including Islamic finance and the empowerment of youth entrepreneurs in Indonesia.
