NILALEG’s Multifaceted Impact: Restoring Ecosystems and Enhancing Food Security
January 3, 2025
Omauni Nursery

The Omauni Nursery operates as a profit-generating enterprise, selling seedlings and supporting local restoration efforts. With infrastructure and water systems provided by NILALEG, the nursery planted 112 seedlings—including indigenous and fruit tree species (Corky Monkey Orange- Omauni) , Marula tree (Eemwoongo) , Berchemia discolor (Omuve) and Camel Thorn trees , Mangoes, Lemon, Guava and Papaya among others. The project generated N$1,980 in income by October 2024. Three caretakers ensure the nursery’s operations remain smooth.
Okongo Restoration Site

In early 2024, the Okongo Restoration Site planted indigenous trees across four trial sites, with 70 trees initially planted each spanning 1.5 hectares. The indigenous plants at these sites were supplied by the Omauni Nursery. This initiative aims support Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) goals and contribute to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets, addressing climate and land restoration commitments.
Masikili Primary School Orchard Project
At Masikili Primary School, 71 learners benefit from an orchard featuring mango, guava, neem, cashew nut, pawpaw, and sweet apple trees. The school’s garden supplements food security by producing tomatoes, spinach, maize, and more. The harvests are shared with learners’ families, fostering resilience and sustainability.

A Legacy of Transformation
NILALEG’s impact goes beyond landscapes; it has transformed lives. From carpentry workshops to honey production, from livestock provision to land restoration, the project has empowered communities with skills, resources, and hope. These stories exemplify resilience, innovation, and the enduring potential of people and nature thriving in harmony. While challenges arose, the lessons learned have become the foundation for future successes.
As Namibia continues its journey toward sustainability, NILALEG stands as a testament to the extraordinary outcomes possible when human potential and environmental stewardship unite.
