The tradition of folk costume is revived and cherished in Ungheni

Liliana Starciuc from Ungheni municipality is fond of traditions and traditional costumes. 

In 2018, her passion turned into a business, that promotes the traditional costume as an authentic symbol of the national identity.

The computerised tailoring and embroidery workshop specialises in the manufacturing of personalised handicrafts, traditional costumes, embroideries, and handmade items.  The entrepreneur puts her heart into each handmade embroidery. The clothing items for women, children, and men, as well as the traditional Moldovan accessories, have a unique design.

Thanks to the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” programme, financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF, Liliana Starciuc benefited from financial support worth €25,000. Thanks to the support from the European Union, the workshop was upgraded, increased productivity and diversified production. The workshop was equipped with several machines and pieces of equipment, which allow the creation of traditional outfits for various occasions. Her creations have a chromatic specific, a historical geometry woven into the wave of modernism that stand out through their style and creativity. Four people are currently working at the workshop of Liliana Straciuc.

Liliana Starciuc’s workshop is also an attraction for tourists visiting Ungheni municipality who are interested in the culture and traditions of this region. Liliana Starciuc’s creations have reached beyond the borders of the Republic of Moldova, being appreciated both by the customers from the country and from abroad.

The “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” (2019-2024) supports smart, inclusive, and sustainable social and economic development in the regions of Cahul and Ungheni to ensure a better quality of life for citizens. The program, with a total budget of €23 million provided by the European Union, is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
