17 proposals for remodeling public transport in Chisinau were presented at the Urban Mobility Hackathon yesterday evening. The participating teams came with various ideas: transferring bus stations to the city’s outskirts; transshipment nodes; dedicated public transport lines; express transport units between sectors; flexible timetable of trolleybus/bus routes depending on actual population density; restricting private transport on certain priority segments for public transport during peak hours; mechanisms for digital detection of road segments with traffic jams; mobile application for accumulating loyalty points when using public transport, etc.
The teams presented their ideas to the jury of experts from the United Nations Development Programme, Orange Systems, Technical University of Moldova and European Space Agency/Geoville. The jury selected the following three winning initiatives:
Team | Description | Prize |
1st place: Ion Mosnoi, Vasile Catana | Creating the algorithm to improve the bus trolleybus timetable based on the number of users per hour and day. Parallel development of the mechanism of exchange of transport units available between routes to fill the bus needs in the concrete time interval. |
|
2nd place: Luca and Vasile Schidu, Grigore Mardari, Pavel Novac, Dragos Lupei | Replacement of bus stations located inside the city with 5 peripheral hubs, 1 for each sector. According to this solution, intercity buses will no longer enter the city, as people will use public transport to travel within the city. This solution comes to decongest the region of existing stations and develop a convenient public transport network for people. The data were analyzed for the central station region of Chisinau. |
|
3rd place: Adrian Croitor, Alexandru Bacinschii, Dumitru Cotovici, Eugeniu Cepoi | Algorithm development for analyzing urban mobility (public transport) by using historical geospatial data and estimating the areas at risk of congestion. The data helps to optimize public transport, by reducing the number of overlapping routes and creating transshipment nodes. |

This is the first hackathon in Moldova that analyzes stratified data on transport and people mobility in Chisinau. The teams consisting of web developers, data analysts, urban planners analyzed complex georeferential urban mobility data and, on their basis, proposed solutions for remodeling public transport. The participants were guided by experienced mentors from European Space Agency, Orange Systems, United Nations Development Programme and Chisinau City Hall.
The “Urban Mobility Hackathon. Hack the traffic in Chisinau” is the result of an innovative partnership bringing together the United Nations Development Programme, the European Space Agency, Orange Systems, Chisinau City Hall, and the innovation laboratories Green City Lab and Milab. The United Nations Development Programme and Orange Systems are willing to financially and expertly support the implementation of winning solutions in Chisinau.
In Chisinau, there are 31 trolleybus routes and 25 bus routes, of which 6 urban and 18 suburban. In 2018, about 143 mln. passengers were transported by trolleybuses and buses to Chisinau, according to the data of the Directorate of Transport.
