"What? Where? When?" – an electoral edition of the quiz for high school students

November 7, 2022

A new electoral edition of the famous "What? Where? When?" quiz game made the participants of the seventh edition go into overdrive while quizzed over electoral matters. For a few hours, nine teams of students from Chișinău, Anenii Noi, Călărași and Strășeni high schools played each other to win the big trophy.

The event was organized by the Centre for Continuous Electoral Training (CCET), with the support of UNDP Moldova, within the Project "Enhancing democracy in Moldova through inclusive and transparent elections", financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The current edition of the "What? Where? When?" game went into two rounds of 36 questions on electoral matters, the history of elections in Moldova and in the world, as well as famous aphorisms or events from world history. The participants had only one minute to answer each question.

Selected through an open competition, the teams were made of six people between the ages of 17 and 21 years old, from any city or village of the country. 53 high school students took part in the current edition.

"Our goal is, first of all, to draw the attention of young people to electoral issues, to awaken their curiosity and to urge them to learn more about this field," said Doina Bordeianu, director of CCET.

The intellectual battle was won by “Universul” team from a high school from Chișinău bearing the same name. Ariana Isac, a student at the "Universul" High School in Chișinău and member of the team that won the quiz, mentions she has participated for the first time in the competition and her team had an instant victory: "It was an interesting experience for me. I didn't think we would win, but I had high hopes. I learned a lot of curiosities about elections and I made new friends. I don't regret my decision to participate in this competition at all because it is a hot topic, and it helps develop new skills, even for a political career for some of us."

Marius Păvălache, a member of the "La familia" team and a student at the "Nicolae Bălcescu" High School in Ciorescu village, participated in this game for the second time. "I like general knowledge contests and I also love to compete, to push myself. There were some very difficult questions, but together, with the rest of the team, we managed to face them," said Marius Păvălache.

At the end, each participant received gifts – bookstore vouchers worth MDL 500 each, speakers, power banks, and wireless headphones.

UNDP Moldova supports the organization of the intellectual quiz game dedicated to electoral matters "What? Where? When?" since 2017, all editions so far bringing together over 1200 participants from around 140 educational institutions from all over the country.
