The “Monitoring Municipal and Mukhtar Elections from a Gender Perspective” report, prepared by LADE with UNDP support, documents both progress and ongoing barriers to women’s political participation. While monitoring recorded a doubling of elected women since 2016, it also revealed persistent challenges, including patriarchal norms, weak political party support, financial constraints, and political harassment. The report puts forward key recommendations, such as adopting proportional representation with a women’s quota, strengthening legal protections, and promoting greater gender inclusion in parties, institutions, and media, to ensure fair representation of women in politics.
