UNDP Lebanon’s long-standing sustainable energy programme has supported the country’s transition towards a more low-carbon, secure and economically resilient energy future since 2007. Across successive phases, the programme has combined renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, policy and regulatory support, entrepreneurship and capacity development to respond to Lebanon’s evolving energy challenges. To date, more than 250 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects have been implemented or are under implementation across public and private institutions, municipalities, schools, hospitals, industries and critical service providers.

Key interventions have included solar photovoltaic (PV) with and without battery storage systems, energy-efficiency retrofits,  entrepreneurship and incubation support, technical training, and support for national policy and regulatory frameworks. Together, these interventions represent more than 25 MW of renewable energy capacity installed or under implementation and over 40,000 MWh of renewable electricity generation annually, while helping avoid approximately 27,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Beyond these direct results, the programme has contributed to reducing energy costs, improving energy security and continuity of essential services, and strengthening the enabling environment for clean energy investment, local innovation and job creation. It has also supported the growth of Lebanon’s clean energy private sector and helped position renewable energy and energy efficiency as key pillars of the country’s sustainable development and economic recovery.
