Project Overview

This Global Programme supports countries in revising and updating their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The initiative ensures that national targets are consistent with the global mission to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Additionally, the project facilitates the preparation and submission of the 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), providing a technical and financial safety net for countries to meet their international environmental obligations.

Project Objective

• Revise national strategies to reflect the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
• Support the technical preparation and timely submission of the 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
• Ensure biodiversity targets are mainstreamed into national development plans and sustainable development goals.
   

Achievements & Key Figures

• Updated and submitted to CBD[MS8.1] Lebanon’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), with the updated NBSAP scheduled to be officially issued in 2026.
• Initiated the process of developing Lebanon’s 7th National Report (NR) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as part of periodic progress reporting, also due in 2026.
• Organized two comprehensive stakeholder consultation meetings in 2024 to support the NBSAP update process, ensuring a participatory and inclusive approach by actively engaging relevant stakeholders.
   

GESI Component (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion)

The project is designated with a GEN2 gender marker. It incorporates a comprehensive Gender Analysis and Gender Action Plan (Annex 10) to ensure that the revision of NBSAPs is gender-responsive. The programme emphasizes the meaningful participation of womenand local communities in biodiversity decision-making processes. Specific measures include tracking sex-disaggregated indicators and ensuring that national biodiversity strategies address the distinct roles and knowledge of different social groups in natural resource management.
